This ever popular design by Pelle Mortensen of Denmark has stood the test of time. Over 1500 boats were built in Denmark before transferring to the UK.
Sandpiper is one of the later Danish boats and has had a varied life, having previously sailed to the Mediterranean via the French canals, where she spent four years before returning the same way. She still has all of the attachments needed to use the canal systems.
The LM is just about the best of both worlds for sailing and motoring. The long keel design gives good sailing performance and the powerful Bukh engine achieves maximum hull speed of around 6.5 knots easily with plenty in reserve for punching into foul tides.
The rig is sloop type with alloy spars, roller reefed genoa, slab reefed, fully battened main with stack pack and lazy jacks, cruising chute (not currently rigged).
Steering is by tiller for sailing and wheel (in the doghouse) for motoring, these are easily switched manually, and motoring can be switched to autopilot.
The engine is shaft driven with a three bladed prop. and fuel consumption is approx 3 litres/hr at cruising speed of 5knots.
The hull is in the original white gelcoat finish which is in good condition. decks and cabin tops are off white gelcoat, again in generally good condition, apart from some small areas of crazing around the toe rails, which are being treated when the weather improves.
Accommodation is in two cabins, the fwd space forms a double berth and the main cabin has two settees which both convert to double berths, giving six berths in total. The electric flush marine head and a hanging locker are also in this area. All seating was replace with new materials and foam in 2014.
The wheelhouse contains the inner helm position, a small fridge and a full cooking area opposite with two burner gas hob, grill, gas oven and sink with hot & cold water from a pressurised system. There is also a calorifier which runs from the engine or mains power.
The cockpit has seating on both sides for up to eight people, with a hinged table which folds out to allow six to eat.
This area can be totally enclosed by the canopy, which was new in 2014 and this is a superb living space which we have used all year round, giving full standing headroom.
Equipment includes compass, fish finder/depth gauge, nav lights, Garmin colour chart plotter, Navtex, VHF radio, clock and barometer, beaching legs, warps, fenders, Manson supreme main anchor and CQR kedge, two, 2 speed Anderson primary winches, two 100amp leisure batteries, 60amp starter battery, Sterling battery charger. Electric anchor winch with deck mounted switches. Four man valise liferaft, coastal flares. Cockpit shower with hot and cold water, mounted at the stern swim platform.
Safety equipment includes 2 bilge pumps, LPG detector, boarding ladder, liferaft.
Altogether, Sandpiper is a well found yacht in good overall condition and has a good 2013 survey report.
She is based in Langstone harbour, Southsea and is available for viewing by appointment. Call Geoff on 07930 417639.
Price is negotiable but please, no silly offers, these will be refused accordingly as I am not desperate to sell.
The last four years have been spent in the Solent area, berthed in Langstone harbour, but the time has come, due to health issues, to move on into a power cruiser.
