It is with regret that due to family commitments we are selling 'Détente', our Moody 33 Mk1. Built in 1975, Détente took part in the Cape-to-Rio race the following year, and is a great example of these ever-popular cruisers. She would make a great purchase for someone who is looking for a very capable sailing yacht that is ready to go to sea.
She is currently ashore in Faro, Portugal (not at the postcode eBay has insisted we quote!), which is a great base from which to explore the Med, or set off south and west for blue water voyages. The yard is well organised, clean and efficient and current storage rates are €56 per week inc VAT
(2016 - more details below). However, if unsold by April 10th we will be sailing Détente to North Wales. Building ceased: September 1978
Designer: Angus Primrose
Boats Built: 242
'The concept and design of Moody 33 centre cockpit fin keel model was completed by Angus Primrose in 1972 and tooling was completed in November of that year. This was the first production yacht developed jointly between A.H. Moody & Son Ltd, Southampton and Marine Projects (Plymouth) Limited. It was an immediate success and models have appeared ever since.' Power and Sail magazine, October 1974: 'Planned as a comfortable family cruising yacht of light displacement and with a high performance under sail or power, the Moody 33 shows many of the characteristics to be found in the more trendy production yachts of today. Clean, smooth, sleek and with high freeboard, a carefully calculated layout below decks, a roomy central cockpit with two-berth cabin aft, a simple masthead sloop rig, and the fin keel and skeg rudder profile expected of fast yachts, the Moody 33 has all these and a good deal more besides'. Accommodation6 berths (7 possible) in 3 cabins. Main cabin with companionway to cockpit. Single berth with fold-down chart table over, and galley with sink, drainer and 2-burner stove and oven to port. U-shaped settee-berth around table and chart stowage to starboard  (could be converted to optional double-berth) Heads with basin to port with Lavac WC to starboard with hanging-locker behind. RemarksDétente is recently antifouled, ready to launch and sail off where you wish.  She is a capable boat in reasonable condition for her age.  We have arrived at a realistic price taking the following full disclosure into account:·         The rigging is 10 years old and some insurers will request a survey or even replacement, depending on the cover you choose.·         The topsides show the usual knocks and marks on a boat of this age, but as far as we know there is no significant damage. ·         The engine is original and after so many years the wiring is untidy but functional, overhauled in 2016.  The engine starts and runs well but requires the cold-start procedure on the first start of the day.·         The mainsails and genoas are, frankly, old and no longer perfectly shaped, but they can provide plenty more cruising, and we happily intend to sail approximately 1700 nm back to the UK with them.  They have all had seams go at various times and we have resewn them ourselves, but we carry and offer 2 of each for this very reason! We have mentioned these considerations so as not to waste your time if you think you can get a perfect boat for this price.  This is an opportunity to buy a capable boat that is ready to sail at a low price, and make improvements as your budget allows later.  For instance, we intend to give the topsides a new epoxy coating (e.g Awlgrip) to make her look smarter but we will then raise the price to reflect this.  Why not buy the boat now and get cruising without such cosmetic expenses? Contact us via if you have any questions or to arrange viewing. About 'Bruce's yard', Faro (see )Détente is lying at Bruce's yard in Faro, on the south coast of the Algarve, Portugal.  It is a great place to store the boat.  The yard is close to the city centre, with rail and bus station within a short walk, and the airport is only 3.5 miles away by road (we walk it sometimes!).  The yard is neat and tidy and several people live on their boats while doing work etc.  The rate in 2016 is €0.65/m/day which works out at €56 per week inc Portugal's VAT.  Hauling in/out is €95 +VAT each way and so for us this is preferable to the nearby marinas which would be more expensive. The surrounding area is good cruising.  The yard and Faro are in the 'Ria Formoso' which is a cruising ground in itself being a large lagoon bounded by sand islands and contains salt marshes with channels to Faro, Olhao and other places.  To the west are the main attractions of the Algarve with beaches, cliffs and caves.  To the east is the lovely Rio Guadiana, forming the border with Spain and navigable 20 miles to Alcoutim (a haven popular with blue-water cruisers) and well beyond, and then further east to Cadiz, Gibraltar and the Med.The climate is excellent, and even in winter shorts and t-shirts are an option.  The yard is a great base for year-round sailing, with many anchorages and marinas nearby, as it takes your fancy.
