Fishing boats these days are designed to facilitate specific fishing styles aimed at particular species, but also wave and water conditions prevalent in that species’ habitat. Multi species boats often cloud the issue. The Lowe Stinger ST175 won’t handle big-water offshore fishing conditions. But it will serve a wide variety of anglers well on the small and medium-sized lakes, where many bass, walleye and panfish thrive. Powered by a Mercury 60 FourStroke, it has a moderate price tag and will be easy on fuel. It also has plenty of must-have fishing features. The welded-aluminum ST175’s shallow-V hull planes easily and most of the boat’s 17-foot, 5 inch length and 7-foot, 1-inch beam is used to provide level casting decks. The three-across bench seating and the side-console helm are bass boat-style, with fold-down swivelling moveable fishing seats on the fore and aft decks. There’s one seat base aft and three forward, allowing for placement of two seats forward for still fishing. The 36-square-foot forward fishing deck has a 23-gallon livewell and a bow-mounted, 45-pound-thrust MotorGuide electric trolling motor. Aft, there’s a 19-gallon livewell with integrated bait bucket and two tackle lockers with organizing trays. There’s a sizeable dry locker forward and a locking portside 9-foot, 6-inch rod locker. Decks and floors are covered with dark marine-grade carpet. The helm is comfortable and the moulded acrylic console houses easily visible tach, speedo, fuel and trim gauges, plus a Lowrance X-2 fish finder. The short windscreen provides just enough protection. The helm and companion seat backs fold down for easy movement while fishing. A shorter back on the middle seat folds down to form a step leading aft. With carpeted, unobstructed decks, low topsides, painted hull and attractive graphics, the Lowe Stinger will fit in well with the bass fishing crowd. Rigged with a 60-hp outboard (it’s rated up to 75 hp), the Stinger has an adequate top speed of 31.6 mph at 6200 rpm. It reaches 20 mph in 4.8 seconds and cruises comfortably at 19 mph at 4000 rpm and 24 mph at 5000 rpm.The Lowe Stinger ST175 is no metal-flake bass-fishing speed demon, but it’s stable, comfortable, well-equipped, and ready to fish.TEST BOAT ENGINE
