Girrakool was the last work boat built at Goat Island by the then Maritime Services Board. She is one of three sister ships, Girrakool, Girra Girra and McLeay. McLeay is still in survey doing commercial work as a cruise boat on Sydney harbour. She is a great boat and cruises well with her reliable 150 hp ford engine and PRM gearbox. The wheelhouse give excellent vision all round. She comes with original drawings and photos of her construction and use. She is heavily constructed with 63 x 25 mm laminated spotted gum frames at 200mm centres. Planking is 100 x 32 mm with spotted gum hardwood used up to the waterline and softwood above. The internal fit-out consists of a metho two burner stove with grill, stainless steel sink, seating, table, icebox and a large settee that converts to a double bed.The front cabin has a manual toilet connected to a 150 litre stainless steel holding tank plus a hand basin. She has a reliable 150 hp turbocharged ford diesel engine. The previous owner has replaced the PRM gear box ($8,000) approx. 4 years ago, fitted a new water pump, heat exchanger, and oil cooler. Two new Delkor 165G batteries and a small solar battery charging system were fitted in 2015. She has 30 metres of new 10 mm short link anchor chain. New hydraulic steering lines and various instruments have also been fitted. She has two x 350 litre fuel tanks, a 350 litre water tank, all with contents gauges. She has an anchor windlass with both up and down controls from the wheelhouse. She also has the origianl spotlight, horn and windscreen wipers.I purchased Girrakool as a restoration project when I retired from work earlier this year. I had a survey carried out prior to purchase and that report is available, as is a valuation. She was antifouled and had new annodes fitted in February 2016. The original 25 mm white beech decks have deteriorated and had been leaking for some time. I have temporarily sealed them to prevent water ingress. My intention was to remove the decks and replace them with marine ply, fibre glass and 10mm thick white beech decking timbers. A good and time saving option would be just to ply and fibreglass the decks and finish with a non-slip painted finish. The hull is generally in good condition with solid spotted gum framing and planks to the waterline.
I have replaced the wheelhouse floor, varnished some wheelhouse cupboards, made a new samson post, a replica of the original dry exhaust funnel with new LED navigation lights and made some laminated roof beams. The replica funnel will provide ventilation and will allow a lifting boom to be installed to lift a dinghy onto the cabin roof. The laminated beams were to extend the main cabin back to give room for a shower and toilet in the main cabin (port side and forward) with a settee that would convert to a double bed behind. The existing settee was to be re-used.I am unable to carry out any further work after falling and aggravating an old injury to my back. I am no longer able to bend without pain. Girrakool MUST be sold. All offers will be considered. Girrakool is well known on Sydney harbour and is of historical significance. She is a pleasure to drive and has the potential to be an excellent day boat / cruiser for some-one interested in restoring her. Her registration has been renewed until September 2017. All offers will be considered as I am unable to complete her refurbishment and she must be sold.
