We have owned "Phoenix" for seven years, and purchased her from the late John Leather's family. After a couple of seasons we found the deadwood to be in a poor state and replaced the original elm with mahogany. (See photo) At the same time new keel bolts were fitted. A new flore was added with a few doublers and some re-fastening. All this work was undertaken by Kings Yard at Pin Mill on the Orwell, who are particularly sympathetic to traditional boats and construction. She has an old Mariner 4 outboard mounted on a removable bracket on the port side of the hull, enabling the boat to be steered with the tiller. Circumstances have prevented us sailing her this year - nothing to do with the boat. She has rather old sails which set rather better than in these photos. Also there is a boom-up cover and a winter tarpaulin for when she sits on her trailer. Having the trailer makes working on her at home very easy, and she tows easily behind our old Volvo. "Phoenix" is parked at our house near Bungay on the Norfolk/Suffolk boundary, and you are very welcome to come and see her. She has a transatlantic pedigree in that the first one, "Nova Espero" designed and built by brothers Colin and Stanley Smith was sailed from Canada to England in 1949, and then back again, east to west a couple of years later.
