Passport 40s are valuable boats.
Passport 40s are valuable because of their outstanding hull form, solid construction, and unique layout.  This Passport 40 example has the classic layout:
Head is all the way forward in the V.  I know this sounds odd, but I've used it in a tropical storm and it's no problem.Main berth is a pullman berth, just aft of the head.  The side entry is fabulous, no more climbing into the v-berth.Main cabin is open and spacious.  In the center is a folding leaf table with 270° seating formed by three settees.Motor is directly under the table, in the center of the boat where it belongs, with full access to all sides.Nav station to starboard facing the hullQuarter cabin to starboard. I'd categorize the berth as a "one and a half" - two kids, or two very friendly adults.Spacious galley to port, at the bottom of the companionway stairs.
The boat has very good bones.  My wife and I sailed her up from deep in the Caribbean 3 years ago, and tacked around Frying Pan Shoals in a tropical storm.  We lived aboard for a few more months and then bought a house.  Then I started a refit that I just can't finish...Here's the good stuff on the boat:
No teak decksModern Yanmar 3jh4e with low hours (2006)Newer standing rigging with Sta-Lok fittings (probably 2006)Excellent anodized mast and boom (perhaps not original, 2006?)Harkin roller furlingGood genoaGood spinnaker and boomAll lines led aft to cockpitSelf tailing winchesSimrad NSS chartplotter, Simrad AIS, Simrad wind/depth/speed instruments (2013)EPIRB (2013)Good bottom, no blisters, has had barrier coat in the pastNice dodger, bimini, rear canvasWater-powered electric generator (2013)Newer stove with electric solenoidNew head.Large fridge with side door.My entire collection of sailing goodies - a full library, odds and ends, tools, everything I got.
Projects for you:
Complete amidship chainplate knees to remedy an original Passport flaw (the old knees are out and I'll give you my design for the new)Rebuild the cabin sole, (the old sole is out and the plywood is purchased and ready for install) Portlights need new glass and gaskets (cheap and easy)Interior brightwork mostly good, some touchups required, exterior brightwork needs attention, almost no varnish left (good thing)Exterior gelcoat touchups, or paint it if you want.Needs new cushions in main cabin, berths OK.No mainsail.  (Now is the time to install in-boom furling!)
The boat is currently inside, at a boatyard, $300/month storage cost.  This place is the perfect DIY site ready for you to assume the project. They have compressed air, electricity, smooth concrete floors, with a lot of room to spread out. You could probably put a camper outside to stay while working on the boat.If you're not a DIYer, the yard is trustworthy, affordable, and does decent work.
